The
most unique experience at Home Port is the Plume
Long boats (or ship's boats) are a wonderful way for a group of 6 to 14
people enjoy our marine environment. We row, sail, sing chanties, observe
marine wildlife and relax. There are no passengers on the Plume, only
crew. We will find a job for all students no matter the skill level or
experience. Our students leave with positive memories of teamwork, hands
on history and an appreciation for the beauty and biological diversity
that Bellingham Bay offers.

A
little history:
The Plume is a replica of the long boat from Captain George Vancouver's
ship, Discovery. Vancouver and his officers, Joseph Baker (Mount Baker),
Peter Puget (Puget Sound), Joseph Whidbey (Whidbey Island) commanded boats
like the Plume through these inland waters in the summer of 1792. From
these boats they charted these waters and left their names on the charts
for posterity. Plume was built by staff and students of Home Port Learning
Center in 1996. She serves as a floating classroom for the school. There
is no motor on Plume. She has 10 oar stations and a schooner, dipping-lug
sailing rig. We operate the boat as the 18th century sailors did (without
all that flogging).
